Poachers enjoy a winning start to the season

AFC Kempston 0, Boston Town 2

Boston Town got off to a winning start in their opening United Counties League Premier Division fixture of the season in Bedfordshire, writes Pat Megginson.

A much changed Rovers side pressed from the start but posed no threat to the Town defence marshalled by skipper Loz Lambley. The Poachers however looked a threat from the outset and were rewarded on 10 minutes when Craig Michell was felled in the area. Matty Kennedy converted from the spot.

With Alex Beck going close on a couple of occasions, Town went further ahead after 17 minutes with a very early contender for goal of the season. Right back Jack Burrows brought the ball out of defence and thread a ball through to Callum Walker who spotted Lori Borbely. The Romanian talisman took a touch and, spotting the home keeper off his line, let loose a shot from 37 yards out. The goal effectively ended the contest, as Town dominated the rest of the half. Their only scare came when keeper Ricky Drury was injured from a corner by a reckless Kempston challenge.

The second half continued much in the same vein with Town perhaps sitting back a little. The lively Eyett replaced Walker ad seems to have struck up a good relationship with the tireless Beck. The latter went frustratingly close on two more occasions. Charlesworth shot narrowly wide before making way for Danny Wood. Danny Barrett replaced Nick Jackson as the game drew to a close. By this time Kempston had thrown caution to wind but, apart from drawing a point blank save out of Drury, failed to make the most of their few half-chances.

A good overall team performance from Nathan Collins' side which puts the Poachers in sixth spot in the early standings. Town travel to Peterborough Northern Star in the league on Tuesday evening, kick off 7:45pm and face Thurlow Nunn (Eastern Counties) Premier Division side Walsham-le-Willows this Saturday in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round at the DWB Stadium, kick off 3pm.

Town: Drury, Burrows, Jackson (Barrett), Lambley (capt.), Nuttell, Mitchell, Borbely, Charlesworth (Wood), Beck, Walker (Eyett), Kennedy. Subs not used: Warren, Wilson
