Poachers march on in the UCL Knockout Cup

Boston Town 4, Potton Utd 2

Boston Town continued their emphatic cup form on Saturday with a 4-2 victory over Potton United, writes Tristan Simpson.

The Poachers raced into an early lead and displayed control throughout the game, despite periods of pressure from the away side. The win saw Town book their place in the last 16 of the United Counties League knockout cup.

The game begun with high intensity from the home side and they raced into a 10th minute lead. A cross from the right wing was brought down well in the box by Jack Wightwick, who  laid the ball to Jordan Nuttell to place his strike into the top right corner. It didn’t take long before Boston increased their lead through Alex Beck in the 14th minute. He showed great footwork before striding into the box and sliding the ball past the Potton keeper. With the score already 2-0 and only fourteen minutes played, the Poachers carried on their vibrant display and struck  yet another goal in the 18th minute. It came from new signing Kyle McGuigan who struck a superb dipping shot from 20 yards, a spectacular first impression to give the home supporters on his debut. However despite the home side seeming to be fully in control; their confidence took a dent in the 24th minute when the visitors pulled a goal back, a visible statement that they would not be overcome so easily.

The second half began with less ferocity shown by either side, but it was Potton  who struck first to unsettle Poachers nerves . Despite a solid performance from the Boston defence throughout the game, it couldn’t help keeper James Doughty who, after he’d made an excellent first save, was helpless to prevent the onrushing Potton winger tapping the reboundl into the net. However the nervousness didn’t last long as Beck produced another fantastic finish in the 64th minute, his 16th goal of the season. From outside the area he turned on the spot and hit a looping volley into the corner of the net, with the Potton keeper looking on in despair. Boston saw out the game in comfort with Michael Wood and Simon Ashton solid in the centre of defence.

The Poachers will be away to Northampton Sileby Rangers in the 2nd Round.

Town: Doughty, Fleming (Borbely), Lambley, Ford,  Wood, S Ashton, Parnell (Eyett), McGuigan, Beck, Nuttell, Wightwick.
