Late goal sinks Poachers yet again

Boston Town 1, Sleaford 2

Boston Town's miserable year ended almost inevitably with another agonising defeat.

With news of George Michael's death still sinking in, 2016 had yet another kick in the teeth in store.

We've lost the likes of David Bowie, Prince, Victoria Wood, Terry Wogan and Muhammad Ali over the last 12 months - but it's also been an awful year for Boston Town fans for footballing reasons.

The Poachers thought they'd taken an early lead in this festive derby but Simon Ashton's effort on seven minutes was disallowed, although no-one seemed to know why. The Poacher's poor luck continued later in the half when referee Avison chose to halt play for a Boston free kick just as Jordan Nuttell was about to shoot on goal with just the visiting keeper to beat.

After the goalless first period. Sleaford took the lead through a soft penalty given for what looked like a dubious handball, the ball striking an unextended arm from close range..

But Boston's influential Hungarian Bence Farago levelled on 70 minutes with a clever back header for what would have been a  deserved point. Youngster Jordan Tate was dragged down in the area later on but penalty claims went unanswered. And then on 85 further calamity struck. The visitors were allowed to take a throw from the wrong place and the subsequent saw the excellent Lambley make another fine save only for the parried shot to go straight to a visiting striker to tap home.

Boston will be wondering when their luck will change, having coming up empty handed yet again when they were good at least for a share of the points.

POACHERS: J Lambley, Tate, Howitt (Frost),  Ashton, Forth, Ford (capt.) (Minor), L Lambley, Fixter, Nuttell, Maddison (Farago), Revell. Sub (not used): Borbely
