Poachers lose opening pre-season friendly

Boston Town 0, Lincoln City XI 4

A number of first team players and trialists saw time in Boston Town's first action of the pre-season against a well drilled Lincoln City XI.

The visitors made a lively start, sweeping down Town's right and putting in a dangerous cross which beat everyone. The home side would eventually start to show their dominance with trialist James Reed looking in control in midfield along side Lori Borbely.

Following the last in a series of corners the ball broke to Jason Field on the edge of the area but his powerful volley struck the bar.

On 18 minutes the impressive trialist, 17 year old Frazer Bayliss' cross was met by returnee Lawrence Lambley who forced a fine save from the Imps custodian. Lambley was playing in an unaccustomed centre forward role with the Poachers having no recognized strikers available.

The Imps constantly tried to catch Town on the break but were repeatedly caught offside. On 21 minutes they managed to beat the trap but again no-one was on hand to meet the cross. Town then performed their own version as the pacey Stocks' cross eluded everyone.

Town were by now creating numerous chances with Field's shot from the edge of the area hitting the bar and Borbely's goalbound effort being blocked. Youngster Bayliss and Field were showing good understanding and the latter went close with another effort on 38 minutes. However the visitors would break down field and, in a carbon copy of previous moves, crossed from the right, the ball looping over Town 'keeper Drury for the easiest of headers for a 1-0 lead.

Town who could have been three by this stage responded immediately with the luckless Bayliss' shot being deflected against the post and rebounding to safety.

Boston fielded a side largely of trialists and coaching staff in the second half but would have equalized but for a fine save from the visiting keeper from Stocks' rasping shot. It was then the Imps turn to hit the woodwork when trialist Mark Thompson was beaten to the ball with 16 year old keeper Josh Smith rooted to the spot.

Only James Reed, out of contract at Boston United, would play the full 90 minutes, and it was a great interplay between him and Stocks that led to young Joe Daubney heading just over on 56 minutes.

With Town now fielding an unrecognizable line up defensive mistakes would see the Imps capitalise and register three more times before the end of the game.

Town management, however, were impressed with what they saw from their regular squad members and especially from trialists Reed and Bayliss.

Town line-up from: Ricky Drury, Ryan Leggett, Nick Jackson, Lorand Borbely, Michael Wood, Luke Wilson, Frazer Bayliss, James Reed, Lawrence Lambley, Callum Stocks, Jason Field, Josh Smith, Mark Thompson, Matt Hocking, Colin Wilson, Richard Reed, Joe Daubney, Shane clancy.

On the day Town were without: Josh Ford, Mickey Stones, Ollie Maltby, Ollie Pinner, Mark Foster and Liam Bull.

The Poachers entertain a Grimsby Town XI this Wednesday evening at Tattershall Road, kick off 7:45pm.
