Boston Town manager Gary Edgley was impressed with his team's fitness levels in their first pre-season friendly.

They were edged out 1-0 by a new-look Grantham Town side who play two levels above the Poachers.

Edgley said: "To be honest it was good to get that first game out of the way.

"We knew it would be tough against Grantham, they have strengthened a lot pre-season and I fully expect them to have a much better season than they did last year. I was pleased with how we competed with them, we adopted a counter attacking option and I felt we were comfortable throughout the game, limiting them to only one real chance - which they scored from, just like all good teams do! - in the fist half, and one real chance in the second half.

We created two good chances from open play in the first half that we really have to do better from although one of our efforts was cleared off the line by the defender. In the second half again we created two good chances from open play but we also had three very good chances from set pieces that again we have to do better from.

"Overall though I was fairly pleased. I said to the players before the game that it wasn’t just about today, this game was just part of our pre-season and the main objective is to be ready for 3 August.

"The main bits that I was happy with were the level of fitness some of my players showed and some of the football we played at times was very good. I honestly didn’t expect us to create some of the chances we did with the new front line that we had on show - not that I don’t have belief in them, it’s that this is the first time these lads have played together.

"I have more players returning this week from holidays and injuries so I’m looking forward to seeing those link up with what we have.

"In terms of the squad I will definitely be making one if not two more signings this week then that should be all our business complete so we can then fully concentrate on the squad and make sure we are fully prepared for 3 August."
