Newark 3, Poachers 4

by Tom Carter

Jordan Tate scored a late winner for Boston Town on a night they won’t forget in a hurry in a United Counties League classic against Newark and Sherwood United.

Going into the game, Newark were thirteen unbeaten in all competitions and sat third in the table. Boston Town were eighth in the league after losing 1-0 away to Anstey Nomads the previous Saturday.

It only took three minutes for the first goal to be scored. Sketchley came down the left flank for the hosts, his original shot was saved by Travis Portas but Nyle Blake was there to put home the rebound. The home side led 1-0. However, moments later, Boston Town found themselves level. Lee Beeson’s corner found the feet of Fraser Bayliss whose shot took a wick off Marshall Young who got the last touch. The score was level just after six minutes.

Newark and Sherwood United won a penalty in the 17th minute, which was thought to be a debatable decision, and there number eleven Kieran Cummings calmly slotted the ball away to make it 2-1 with his left foot. Newark’s lead only last for a short time again as five minutes later, Lee Beeson drifted a fantastic cross from a free kick to find the head of Jordan Nuttell who directed the ball into the bottom right corner. 2-2 was the score and also at Half Time.

In the opening stages to the second half, the hosts controlled the play well and a lot of decisions were not going the way of the Poachers. One of their former players in Luke White found the net for the hosts to give them a 3-2 lead which resulted in Liam Adams getting sin-binned due to dissent. In that space of ten minutes where Town were missing a player, Lee Beeson won a penalty and calmly dispatched it away to make it 3-3 with ten minutes and injury time to play. Just what the Poachers deserved after showing a real resilient attitude throughout the game. Beeson almost won it as well with a volley which just went over the bar.

In the 95th minute, Logan Tate picked up the ball after Bayliss dinked it to him. Tate found his brother Jordan who managed to get a shot away and quite remarkably won it for the away team. At Full Time, the score was Newark and Sherwood United 3-4 Boston Town.

A fantastic team performance from the Poachers with a never say die spirit clearly being shown. They next face Kimberley Miners Welfare at Home on Saturday 29th October at home in the United Counties League KO Cup.
