Tributes to Pete

Warm tributes have been flooding in to long-serving Boston Town stalwart Pete Massam senior.

Since we posted the sad news of his death, messages have poured in from people passing on their condolences and sharing memories of his huge contribution to our club.

Former manager Martyn Lakin remembered him as “a wonderful man who did so much for the Poachers”.

Ex-players Stu Park, Mark Foster, Mark Melson, Nigel Vince, Kevin Reeson, Leigh Taylor and Paul Timby were among the many former players who paid tribute to someone they remembered as a wonderful man and a successful coach.

Dean Elston, who was part of Boston Town’s last United Counties League Premier Division title win in 2001, said Pete was and would always be a big part of Boston Town history. He recalled: “He was a big part of my time at the club. Both Pam and Pete were so welcoming and always had time to chat.”

Steve Pinner, whose son Ollie made more than 300 appearances for the Poachers, said: “Pete was a smashing guy, always had time to chat, even when he was going through tough times.”

Sports reporter Duncan Browne said: “I’m so sorry to hear this. A lovely man and one of the first people you’d see going into the ground. Always had a smile and joke for you, even when he wasn’t well.”

Former programme editor and kit man Andy Sandall, who now lives in the USA, said: “Families like the Massams are the lifeblood of a community club like FC/Town and Pete was always willing to fill any role that was needed at the time.

“I can never thank him enough for spotting the potential in me as a shy teenager to offer me the chance to write the away game reports. My thoughts are with Pam and the family, and thanks Pete for everything.”

  2. Unsung heroes don’t come bigger than Pete and Pam Massam. My heartfelt condolences to Pam and Pete Jnr and to the Boston Town family. I was privileged to know them in their prime, and as I’ve said in print Pete Jnr was my partner in crime for an after match beer. But Mum and Dad and all the behind the scenes team were like that other family away from home, couldn’t do enough for you, couldn’t do enough for the club. I saw Pam a couple of years back still in the tea hut, she didn’t recognise me at first but I was astonished that over 35 years later they were still there. Pete was an absolute gentleman and always had a smile, hard working, humble all the qualities you’d die for in todays society. I was privileged and blessed to be a part of the 80’s scene at the club, and am grateful for every single person that worked so hard for the FC. RIP Mr M ⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️ Shippy
