Return to Brigg

This week’s semi-final at Brigg Town will be a nostalgic trip for many reasons, writes Simon Ashberry.

It’s the first time the clubs have met for 23 years.

And for me personally, it will also bring back memories of my first ever published match report – from Boxing Day 1976.

I was still at school at the time but keen on journalism as a career, so it was a thrill to see my name in the Boston Standard – despite the 3-2 defeat at Brigg.

Match report from Boxing Day 1976

It’s good to see Tom Carter following that tradition almost half a century later!

The history between our two clubs goes back almost 60 years.

Boston FC’s first ever season in the Lincolnshire League in 1964-65 saw us play Brigg. We enjoyed some close tussles in the 1970s and 1980s when we were both together in the Midland League and then briefly the Northern Counties East League.

In recent decades, however, they’ve only met in cup competitions.

Three times previously we’ve played each other in a county cup semi-final, with Boston winning one and losing the other two.

The most recent game between the two clubs was also a semi-final in the Lincs Senior Trophy. That was in March 2000 when goals from Dave Scotney and Graham Neal weren’t enough to prevent a 3-2 defeat at Brigg.

Martyn Bunce’s side will be hoping for a better outcome this time around.
