Poachers ‘chase eggs’

Did you fall for our spoof April Fool’s Day story? Here’s how it appeared:

Boston Town will take part in a trial using experimental egg-shaped balls this Easter.

Scientists say they have new evidence that it’s easier to pass and shoot footballs accurately if they’re slightly oval rather than completely round.

Research has been carried out by the Joint Office for Kinetic Energy (JOKE) into how balls travel when kicked or headed.

Project leader Professor Ralph Knott-Trew announced the trial would kick off on 1 April.

“Egg-shaped balls are not a new thing in sport but in rugby they’re mostly carried,” he said.

“This new research shows for the first time that they actually roll more smoothly if they’re ovoid.”

The United Counties League has struck a sponsorship deal with Cadbury’s, which means footballs used during the trial will carry Creme Egg branding.

Professor Knott-Trew added “Our press officer has told me to say it’s very egg-citing news.”

His team of research scientists also tried other variations but found that they didn’t work so well, for example, pyramid-shaped footballs.
