Poachers 2, Selston 0

by Tom Carter

The Poachers signed off their home campaign by dispatching bottom markers Selston with 2 second half goals.

It should have been more but Martyn Bunce will be happy enough after his side bounced back from the frustration of their midweek defeat at Melton.

Boston had several chances in the opening minutes. Fraser Bayliss headed wide from a Lee Beeson cross and Luke Wilson’s header from a corner was cleared off the line before Harry Limb forced 2 saves from the visiting keeper.

The closest Selston came to scoring in the first half was a well-struck free kick which just went over the bar.

Bayliss went close again either side of the break, first shooting wide after neat build-up with Richard Ford and then firing an effort too high.

The visitors forced Travis Portas into his first serious save of the afternoon in the opening minutes of the second period but then Limb struck after 56 minutes. His volley was one of the best goals seen at Mortgages For You Stadium this season.

Liam Adams twice threatened to double the lead – first seeing his acrobatic effort go just wide and then hitting a powerful shot from a Beeson cross just over the bar.

Beeson missed from close range after 77 minutes but 5 minutes later it was his corner that was headed home by Tom Mucklin to make the game safe.

Jason Field almost made it 3-0 for the Poachers late on as he just tapped wide from another great Beeson free kick deliver and the Selston keeper again denied Wilson at the death.

Town: Portas, Mucklin, J Tate, Maddison (Young), Ford (Field), Wilson, Beeson, Hobbins, Limb (Slater), Adams, Bayliss (J Nuttell); unused subs: Borbely
