Cup final preview

Holders Boston Town go into this year’s Lincs Senior Trophy Final as underdogs.

Lincoln United have already beaten them twice in the league this season and are in 2nd place in the United Counties League Premier Division North table, while the Poachers sit in 10th.

The Whites are assured of a play-off place and could still pip Sherwood Colliery to the title. Remarkably, they’re also still fighting on 2 other fronts – on 3o March and 6 April they play Romford in their 2-legged FA Vase semi-final and on 10 April they travel to Skegness Town for a UCL Cup semi-final.

Add to that the fact that Boston Town have a dismal recent record against Lincoln United. In the last 11 meetings between the 2 sides, Boston have managed just one draw and suffered 10 defeats.

This 2-2 FA Cup draw in 2010 was the only time in 11 games that Boston Town have avoided defeat against Lincoln United

The last time they beat them was when a Darren Gibbons goal earned them a 1-0 victory in the Central Midlands League in March 1990.

But Martyn Bunce’s side know they have a great opportunity to end that sequence – they’re unbeaten in 8 games since late January while Lincoln have lost 3 times over the same period.

The Poachers also have a fantastic recent record in this competition, having reached 3 of the last 4 finals. A quarter-final defeat at Winterton in 2021 was their only Lincs Senior Trophy defeat in the past 5 seasons.
