60 years: Our story (part 4)

Here’s the 4th part of Simon Ashberry’s look back at the events of 60 years ago that led the formation of our club,

It was on 26 August 1964 that Boston FC became a fully-fledged club by playing their first ever competitive match.

The hastily-assembled new club travelled to Lincoln United for a midweek fixture in the Lincolnshire Premier League – but went down 4-2.

This was a tough mini-league that Boston FC had entered as well as their main Lincolnshire League campaign.

The Lincolnshire Premier League was a tough competition, also featuring Grimsby Town Reserves, Lincoln City Reserves and Scunthorpe United. Boston FC only managed 2 wins in their 8 games in it – beating Lincoln United in the reverse fixture and also Lincoln City Reserves at home.

The club’s first ever goals were scored by Bert Linnecor and Colin Smith in that away game at Lincoln United on 26 August 1964.

The pair ended up as the club’s top 2 goalscorers as they found the going much more straightforward in the Lincolnshire League.

After that opening day defeat, FC won 12 and drew 3 of their next 15 games – not losing again until a defeat against Grimsby Town Reserves in December.

They won the Lincolnshire League title at a canter, winning 26 of their 30 games and losing just 2 – and those were both at the very end of the season when they took their foot off the gas.

When FC’s captain Linnecor lifted the trophy at the end of the season, we knew this was a club that was here to stay.
