60 years: Matt Price

As our 60th anniversary season draws to a close, Matt Price is the latest player to share his memories.

Matt Price will go down in Boston Town’s history as one of the club’s most loyal players. He turned out for the Poachers 479 times from 1998 to 2010, putting himself third on the all-time list

What was your most memorable match playing for the club?
In the 12 seasons I played for Boston Town there are plenty of memorable moments, but have to say winning the league in 2000-01 was the best feeling I had throughout my football career, especially the way we won it. The trophy was literally already on its way to Cogenhoe and had to be brought back with blue and white ribbons in tow. The bus journey back and celebrations that night that followed is something I’ll never forget

There were some top quality teams and players in the league and plenty of money flying about at some clubs. Boston Town never had that luxury but just goes to show some players want to play for their manager, the club and the people around it and that was certainly the case in my time at Town. In the 12 seasons I played under Bob we never finished below 8th (apart from once in 20024-05) and was consistently in the top five, Bob Don-Duncan was a formidable manager who certainly knew how to get the best out of his players on the pitch. One thing I don’t miss is the winter training under one yellow street lamp – the lads from Grimsby didn’t make training that often in winter

Who was the best player you played with at Boston?
I feel I was lucky enough to of played with two of the best to ever play that level of football – Paul Goodhand and Gary Bull were in a class of their own, the natural ability and mastery was unbelievable, as well as that they were both genuine top guys off the pitch.

In terms of local players Lee Rippin, Dave (Toby) Scotney, Graham (Nammy) Neal, Dean Elston were the cogs of the team 110 percenters that gave it their all week in week out and they gave me that mindset of never give up, play as higher level in football you can and I was happy to do that by playing for my local town club.

Any other favourite moments off the pitch?
The supporters on and off the pitch also need to be mentioned. You certainly knew if you weren’t having a good game but they were first to tell you when you did. “Keep it on the island” is something that I never stop hearing in my head from the Last of the Summer Wine boys and even find myself saying it when I watch a match now.
