20 goals for Cotts

Matt Cotton has become the fastest Boston Town player for 19 years to reach 20 goals in a season.

He hit the landmark with his bullet header at Belper United on Saturday.

The only Poacher this century to have got to the milestone at an earlier date was Gary Bull in 2006-07.

Bull’s 20th goal that season came on 14 October. From then on, he continued to score regularly and finished with a club record 57.

Only two other players have managed a 20-goal haul earlier in the season than Cotton.

In Boston FC’s very first season, Colin Smith got there on 7 November, beating Cotton by a single day.

But the all-time club record is held by Mark Cox, who raced to 20 goals in 1980-81 by 4 October. He ended up with 36 that campaign.

Cotton’s achievement is only the 12th time that any Boston Town player has scored 20 goals in a season before Christmas.

Harry Limb notched his 20th goal last season on 3 December.

Bull did it three times in all, as did Carl Smaller in 1993, 1994 and 1995.

Other than Bull, Limb and Cotton, the only other player to have scored 20 goals for the season before Christmas in the 21st century was Liam Harrold in 2001.

Nick Mallinder completes the list of goalscorers who were quick off the mark at the start of the season. In 1979-80, he hit 20 goals for the season by 1 December.
