2025 review of the year

It’s been a year in which Boston Town have continued to transform their fortunes both on and off the pitch.

The Poachers came within a whisker of achieving promotion for the first time in their history when they reached the United Counties League Premier North play-offs.

There’s also been a huge amount of work behind the scenes, improving the Mortgages For You Stadium, raising funds and developing the club’s fan base.

Manager Chris Funnell strengthened his squad throughout 2025 and ends the year with Boston Town sitting proudly top of the table.

After being appointed in October 2024, he initially worked mostly with the players he had inherited from his predecessor Martyn Bunce. By the end of last year, the Poachers had moved up to eighth in the table, still four points adrift of the play-off places.

In January, Funnell started to bring in fresh faces, with Ted Gibbons and Kallum Smith arriving from promotion rivals Lincoln United and Kris Zaluzinskis on loan from Boston United.

Matt Cotton also joined in March, helping to propel the Poachers to a fourth place finish, their highest position for 18 years.

A 2-1 win at Eastwood CFC in the play-off semi-final saw them make it through to the final away at Bourne Town.

Jordan Nuttell’s goal gave the Poachers the lead in front of a massive crowd of 1,781, but the Wakes equalised before winning a nerve-jangling penalty shootout 8-7.

Despite that defeat, it was a memorable end to the season for Boston Town, with Harry Limb finishing with an impressive 36 goals, the joint sixth best tally in the club’s history.

Funnell added more new signings in the summer – Zaluzinskis became a permanent signing and the arrival of Zak Munton, Jack Gurney and Leo Priestley strengthened his options in midfield and up front.

After a stuttering start, the Poachers powered to a 10-match unbeaten run in September and October that saw them surge to the top of the table. They scored seven goals in consecutive games, thrashing Wisbech Town 7-2 and Blackstones 7-0.

A run of three defeats in a row dented Town’s confidence but they rediscovered their momentum at the start of November as they embarked on another lengthy unbeaten run.

Cotton’s scoring streak has been a key factor so far this season. His 26 goals by the end of December put him on course for a record-breaking tally.

Off the pitch, Boston Town have continued to build on the exciting news announced in 2024 that they had finally taken ownership of their Tattershall Road ground from Sportsfunds Ltd, ending decades of uncertainty.

There’s now a new hot food snack bar at the ground and Paul Miles has opened a new club shop where the old tea bar used to be. Paul also launched a new Boston Town Supporters’ Group in 2025, which has been thriving.

Fans will also soon be able to hear a new Boston Town song written by David Holmes and recorded by numerous musicians including Paul Hemmings, who was a member of the Lightning Seeds when they took the football world by storm in 1996 with the number one hit ‘Three Lions’.

And there’s never been a better time to follow the Poachers online. Photographers Steve Davies and Joshua Hallam capture all the action every match day and Charlie Fytche has made the club’s social feeds among the most professional around.
