Taking football to a whole new level

Boston Town are planning to become the first football club in the UK to have a pitch on stilts.

A pioneering £1.4 million pound scheme will see the playing surface at the Mortgages For You Stadium protected against the long-term risk of flooding – by being raised 40ft in the air on specially-constructed pylons.

The Poachers announced at a joint press conference on 1 April that they had secured funding from the Flood Observation Organisation Lincolnshire (FOOL) to pay for the elevated pitch.

The Environment Agency says schemes like this are a high priority in south Lincolnshire. It estimates 91% of buildings in the Boston and Skegness constituency are at some level of flood risk – more than in any other part of England.

FOOL’s dampness director May Dupp said: “This is a revolutionary engineering project and we expect other clubs all around the world will follow suit as climate change makes more and more of an impact.”

However, when asked how fans would watch matches if the game was going on 40ft above them, she replied: “That’s a good point. We hadn’t actually thought about that.”
