When the Humber Bridge was opened in 1981, it was the longest single span suspension bridge in the world.
I remember seeing its imposing towers when I travelled in 1978 to Barton Town’s ground nestling in their shadow.

It was an FA Cup tie which Boston FC won 3-1, with goals from Martin Johnson, Nick Mallinder and Curly Himsworth.
And that would be the last time the Poachers would visit Barton for a competitive fixture until tonight’s 1st Round tie in the Lincs Senior Trophy.
Two seasons later, goals from Peter Barker and Mark Cox helped us to beat Barton Town 2-1 at Winterton in the Lincs Senior A Cup final – the second of three consecutive successes in the competition.
The only other recent meeting between the two clubs was a quarter-final in this same competition in 2006. That was at Tattershall Road when the visitors won 3-2 despite goals from Gary Bull and Micky Nuttell
