The scoreline didn’t suggest it but it was certainly a great game for the neutral as the Poachers shared the points with Deeping Rangers in their first derby of the season.
It was both sides’ second game in the league with Deeping losing to Sherwood Colliery 2-1 the game before and Boston Town drew 2-2 with Quorn. Last season’s game at Deeping ended in a 3-2 victory for the hosts.
The game started off with tackles flying in from everywhere including some clean and some not so much as Luke Steele and Tom Smith got booked for Deeping where Tom Mucklin received a yellow card for the Poachers. It wasn’t until the 23rd minute when the first goal was scored. Former Boston Town player, Aaron Eyett floated in an excellent ball to find Tom Smith, who was unmarked, as he looped his header past Travis Portas to put Deeping into the lead.
Just like against Quorn, the Poachers responded immediately. Fraser Bayliss came down the left hand side, played the ball to Harry Limb who took a touch and scored with his second to get his first goal of the campaign. As quick as that, the score was 1-1. Then another flurry of chances occurred at both ends of the pitch with Deeping’s Luke Hunnings having his header saved fantastic on the line by Portas. Up the other end of the pitch, Lee Beeson’s shot hit the side netting. It was certainly a mad 10 minutes in the first half. At Half Time, the score was 1-1.
Like the first half, the second 45 started off slowly but it soon got going when Richard Ford had his header saved by Dan Swann as the Poachers began to knock on the door. Deeping also had some chances but Portas was replicating his man of the match performance from the game before with some more incredible saves.
Boston were very good at winning the ball in midfield with Layton Maddison having a good game and playing the ball forward. This led to Limb attempting some acrobatic shots but nothing really bothered the Deeping keeper. Fraser Bayliss went down during the second half and was replaced by Marshall Young who also had an effort which went wide. Full Time was Deeping Rangers 1-1 Boston Town (Limb 24′)
After the game, I spoke to Boston Town manager Martyn Bunce for Lincolnshire Non-League Radio. When asked his thoughts on the game, he said: “It was a tough game, tackles were flying in but I was really impressed with the lad’s attitudes again”. When asked about his team responding immediately again being a positive quality, Bunce also said: “100%, he knows the attitude of the group which really pleases me, we just need to work on some little bits and tidy a bit of the general play up.”
