When Boston Town beat Deeping Rangers in last year’s rain-lashed final, it was our first silverware for 14 years.
But the Poachers have a proud tradition in this competition, having won it 8 times over the last 50 years.
We first won it in 1973-74 when it was still known as the Lincs Senior A Cup. A Dennis Reeson penalty was enough to beat Louth 1-0 in the final at Skegness.
In 1979-80, a brace by Nick Mallinder helped beat Winterton 2-0 – and we then went on to lift the trophy twice more in a row.
First we beat Barton 2-1 in the 1980-81 final, with goals from Pete Barker and Mark Cox, following that up with a 3-1 victory against Stamford in 1981-82, courtesy of 2 goals by Martin Johnson and one from Ian Musson.
Boston again won the cup 2 years in a row in 1988-89 and 1989-90, first winning 3-2 against Spalding, with Gary Goddard, Stu Park and Bas Barker on the scoresheet, and then goals from Steve Warren and Park from the penalty spot retained the trophy with a 2-1 win against Holbeach the following season.
It was another 19 years before we would get our hands back on the trophy when Paul Goodhand and Matt Kennedy scored in a memorable 2-0 win against Winterton at Sincil Bank in 2008-09.
Last year’s final against Deeping Rangers saw Jordan Nuttell, and Marshall Young grab the all-important goals at Boston United’s Jakemans Community Stadium. On Wednesday (20 March) Boston Town have the chance to hang on to the trophy when they return the same venue to take on Lincoln United. Kick-off is 7.45pm.
