50 years on

It’s the 50th anniversary of the first time we won the Lincs Senior Trophy.

So what better to celebrate than to lift it again?

Our first success was in 1973-74, when the competition was called the Lincs Senior A Cup and our club were still known as Boston FC. Dennis Reeson scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.

Former FC winger Paul Bownes played in that final against Louth United at Skegness Town’s ground.

In Boston Town’s latest book ‘To Be a Poacher’, he recalled:

“I had torn knee ligaments from our home game with Hednesford some weeks earlier and I was expected to miss the rest of the season.

“I was coming on OK and really wasn’t fit but Bill Curry asked me if I wanted to play given my contribution to the season beforehand. The plan was to see how it went and I took to the field sporting a massive bandage on my right knee. Anyway, as it turned out I played the full 90 minutes.

“The celebration afterwards by the Sheffield-based players, wives and girlfriends was stopping at the market place in Maltby on the way home for fish and chips. Boy, did they taste good! Sounds like the start of an FC tradition.”

You can buy the book ‘To Be a Poacher’ by Simon Ashberry for £15 plus delivery.
