30 years on from Vase run

Today marks the 30th anniversary of our FA Vase semi-final 2nd leg against Taunton Town.

A crowd of 1,785 flocked to Tattershall Road that day, the second biggest ever seen at the ground. It was bettered only by the 2,700 who watched Boston FC play Boston United in the FA Cup in October 1970, still the only time the 2 clubs have met in a competitive fixture.

Bob Don-Duncan’s team fancied their chances of making it to a historic Wembley final after making the long trip to Somerset for the 1st leg the previous week. Carl Smaller had a shot cleared off the line in the first minute and the visitors were unlucky to lose 1-0.

TV cameras turned out for the 2nd leg, which took place on Sunday 27 March 1994 to avoid clashing with Boston United’s game the day before (which attracted a crowd of only 722 incidentally).

Unfortunately the Poachers never really got going in blustery conditions and Taunton scored the only goal of the game after 56 minutes to seal a 2-0 aggregate win.

Despite the result, it remains one of the most memorable afternoons in the club’s history.

The team that day was:

Dale Foxcroft, Nigel Vince, Paul Smaller, Lee Cooper, Pat Clarke, Derrick Nuttell, Shaun Walker, Richard Shaw, Carl Smaller, Neil Horwood, Nick Roddis; subs: Stuart Burns, Fred McDonnell
