60 years: Our story (part 3)

Simon Ashberry continues to re-tell the story of how our club came into being 60 years ago this summer.

Things moved rapidly after the announcement that a new football club was going to be formed.

Most dramatically, Paul Todd quit as Boston United manager and revealed he would be switching to Boston FC.

It was on this day exactly 60 years ago that a momentous public meeting was held.

More than 400 people crowded into the Assembly Rooms on 27 July 1964 to find out more about this new club that was being formed in such dramatic circumstances.

There must have been a palpable buzz of excitement.

For more than 30 years Boston United had been the only show in town – but plenty of football supporters had grown fed up with the way it was being run.

A constitution was established which was designed to prevent the new club being controlled by just one or two people.

Those present at the meeting were told that the new team had been given permission to play temporarily at the Mayflower sports ground and money from Sportsfunds would be used to buy land for a permanent stadium.

Now it was time for Paul Todd to start assembling a team for this new Boston FC – among his first signings were Malcolm Senior, Bob Scott and a player who would become a club legend – Bert Linnecor.

  1. Bert Linnecor. What a fantastic player. Paul Todd certainly used his silver tongue when he made that signing.
