60 years: Paul Goodhand

Our 60th anniversary season celebrations continue with more memories from a club legend.

Paul Goodhand, who scored 135 goals in his stellar Boston Town career from 2004 to 2014, looks back at some of his highlights.

What was your most memorable match playing for the club?
The 2009 Lincolnshire Senior Trophy Final. We won 2-0 against Winterton at Lincoln City. I went on a bit of a mazy run and chipped the keeper which hit the bar and Matt Kennedy was there to finish the move off and put us 1-0 in front. With possibly less than 10 minutes remaining I went on another run and this time my shot beat the keeper to give us a 2-0 win. We had a really good team that season and finished 2nd in the league.

Another memorable game was when we beat Potton United in the league cup final. Gary Bull scored the best goal I’ve ever seen in this game! 2-2 draw and we won on penalties.

Who was the best player you played with at Boston?
I can’t separate Micky Nuttell and Gary Bull. I played with both for at least 4 or 5 seasons and both were brilliant players. Both strikers but offered different options and without their link-up play I don’t think I would have got as many goals as I did.

Nutts had a brilliant football brain and could bring midfielders in to the game with his link-up play. He also scored plenty of goals and was player the opposition hated playing against.

Bully was a unbelievable striker who scored goals at all levels, including the Premier League. He scored over 200 goals for us and some of the goals I’ve seen him score were different class.

Any other favourite moments off the pitch?
I travelled a lot with Shaun Baker for quite a few seasons and we was always late but looking back this was poor from us. We were playing away at Desborough Town. We were often on the A1 most Saturdays and had a routine of nipping to the bookies to put our football bets on. We were way behind schedule but still decided to stop and put our bets on. We then got stuck in traffic so rang Bob (Don-Duncan) to say we’d had problems with Bakes’ car but were on our way.

We got to the ground literally 3 minutes before kick-off. We walked past all the lads in the tunnel ready to go out and play. Bob stood there fuming but unbelievably kept us in his starting 11 so we literally had 2 minutes to get ready. No warm-up etc but we still played and won. Bob was a great manager who always treated us all well but that day I saw the authoritative school teacher come out of him.
