It’s official – Boston Town have broken a long-standing record!
Club historian Simon Ashberry has been poring over the record books and has declared the current run of 13 successive victories the best ever in their history.
It has now eclipsed the 12 straight wins the club managed between March and May 1966. That was part of an astonishing sequence of 34 matches unbeaten from November 1965 to May 1966, when the club were still known as Boston FC and playing in the Central Alliance under Paul Todd.
Chris Funnell’s side began their current winning run on 21 February when they beat struggling Newark & Sherwood 1-0 with a late Fraser Bayliss goal.
Nine more straight victories from then on powered the Poachers to the United Counties League Premier North league title and Champions Cup double.
Three further wins this season have stretched the run to a record-breaking 13 in a row.
The other most notable winning streak in the club’s history came under Bob Don-Duncan. That Poachers side registered a remarkable 19 wins out of 20 games between March and September 2007. The other game in that sequence was the UCL Cup Final against Potton United, which they won on penalties.
Simon explained: “We did lift the trophy that night but, in terms of statistics, it counts only as a draw because the game finished 2-2 after extra time.
“This current run has been truly phenomenal, not least because it started in unconvincing fashion against Newark & Sherwood. It also followed a disappointing run of three defeats which looked to have derailed our hopes of getting promoted.
“From then on, the team seem to have got that knack of finding a way to win. Huge credit goes to the players and coaching and management team.
“It can’t last forever – but I hope the supporters all truly appreciate that they’ve witnessed a little bit of history over the past six months!”
