Nuneaton 2, Poachers 1

Boston Town’s marathon run of midweek fixtures finally came to an end with a narrow defeat.

They returned empty-handed from another gruelling away trip, despite taking an early lead through a sumptuous free-kick by Zak Munton.

Will Van Lier was fouled after driving forward towards the Nuneaton goal after 10 minutes and Munton did the rest with a deadly finish from distance.

The Poachers twice came close to making it 2-0. First a glorious chance fell to Aziz Mhamdi but he couldn’t get the ball out of his feet and then Van Lier’s shot was palmed away.

But it was set-pieces that were to be their downfall.

Brad Stretton levelled for Boro from a short corner routine after 33 minutes.

Then, just as the game looked to be drifting to a draw, Jacob Shilton headed in from another corner after 75 minutes to earn the home side all three points.

Manager Chris Funnell said afterwards he was frustrated that his team were vulnerable from set-pieces.

The result meant the Poachers slipped one place to 7th in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Midlands table.

On Saturday (10 October), they face another long away trip to second-placed Sutton Coldfield Town. Kick off at 3pm.

Boston Town Supporters’ Group is running coach to the game. Limited places are still available. Email bostontownsg@outlook.com or message or phone 07908 093415 to book your seat.

The Poachers have had nine consecutive midweek fixtures – next week will be the first time they haven’t had one since the start of the season.
