Boston Town’s wait for Step 4 league football is almost over.
On Wednesday (12 August), we play our first ever fixture in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Midlands Division when we travel to Corby Town.
After years of knocking around at Step 5, this feels like the big league.
And the Northern Premier League is a big league. For Poachers fans of a certain age, the Northern Premier League will always be associated with our rivals Boston United as the one they used to play in.
During the 1970s, when I was growing up, it was dominated by the likes of Wigan Athletic, Mossley, Stafford Rangers and Altrincham before the formation of what was then known as the Alliance Premier League, the so-called ‘5th division’.
And our first opponents are a big club, there’s no doubt about it. Corby Town have spent plenty of seasons in National League North over the past couple of decades, up against the likes of Stockport County.
They beat Luton Town on their way to the 3rd Round Proper of the FA Cup in 1965-66 and last year they attracted a crowd of 2,766 for their play-off final at home to Worcester City.
It is daunting but this is what everyone has worked towards. Enjoy it!
